Ray is our Christchurch Manager and has over 30 years’ experience in the civil and construction industry. Ray started his earthworks career as a plant operator. From this ‘coal-face’ experience, Ray has first-hand knowledge in earthworks, construction and roading methods and equipment. Ray has management experience in a wide-array of projects, from domestic works to multi-million dollar contracts covering road and driveway constructions, drainage and water works, subdivision developments, cycleway construction, area wide treatments, rock protection and more.
Stacey is our West Coast Manager and has over 20 years’ experience in the civil industry including the past 8 years’ in management and over 10 years’ experience as a surveyor and draftsman. He has been living in Greymouth since 2003 during which time he has gained experience as a Branch Manager in daily operations and business expansion in the contracting industry. Stacey has extensive civil works experience including Project Management for a number of roading, drainage and civil works projects on the West Coast.
Johan is our Twizel Area Manager and has 11 years’ experience in the transportation and construction industry. Johan holds a Bachelor of Technology in Civil and Transportation Engineering and has completed a number of large scale international projects including Hatfield Station, Pretoria, Upgrade of the National Route N17, South Africa and most recently the Fourways Mall Extensions Project, Johannesburg. Johan brings extensive experience in procurement, cost management, works design, production management and quality assurance to the company.
Mark is our Company Projects Manager. He began his career at Paul Smith Earthmoving in 2002 as an Operator before being employed predominantly in Australia for the past 8 years. He has had over 13 years’ experience within the Construction and Mining Industry, the majority of which has been in Supervisory and Management roles of multi-million dollar projects. Mark is very skilled and experienced in large scale civil works construction management across a range of work streams (roading, earthworks, drainage, quality, environmental and safety) including pricing, resourcing and programme execution.
Murray is a Project Manager and brings to the company over 15 years’ experience in civil construction and plant operation. Murray began with the company in 2006 as a Senior Operator. Murray moved into management by overseeing contracts in Christchurch. Upon moving back to Timaru in 2014 he further developed his staff, resourcing and programme execution skills by providing services for electricity network contractors (Netcon), on NZTA Maintenance Contracts (with Downer) and on large scale projects for national-scale contracting companies. Murray’s project experience includes Kiwirail Otaio Bridge Replacement Project, Primeport Timaru Holcim Project, Redruth Landfill Cell 3.4 Construction Project and the Timaru UFB installation and Oceania Dairy Stage 2 development among other works.
Brendan is a Project Manager and has over 22 years’ experience in the transport and civil industry and has been with Paul Smith Earthmoving for the past 16 years. He began as a truck driver in 2002 before progressing to Operations Manager where he was responsible for all and staffing and plant management in the Timaru & Ashburton branches. In 2015 Brendan made the move to Project Manager where he has since managed the Tekapo Town Centre Stage 2 Commercial Subdivision, South Canterbury Network Outcomes Contract.
Ryan is our Christchurch Operations Manager and has over 10 years’ experience in the civil and electrical supply industry. He has been employed predominantly in Australia working as a Line Mechanic Supervisor planning and running LV and HV construction and maintenance projects. Since Ryan’s return to New Zealand he has managed both the Christchurch transport operations as well as a number of projects for Paul Smith Earthmoving including Christchurch Town Hall Conservation Project, SCIRT Roading projects and UOC Science and Innovation Centre project. Following success in these areas Ryan has taken on the responsibility of the operational coordination and execution for the Christchurch branch.
Cameron is a Contracts Manager and is responsible for the management of specific contract works in the South Canterbury region. Cameron began at Paul Smith Earthmoving in 2008 working as an Operator first in Timaru before relocating to Christchurch in 2011 to assist with earthquake repairs. From 2014 to 2017 Cameron has been employed in the construction and mining industry as a Senior Operator in Australia where he gained experience working on major multi million dollar projects before his return to Paul Smith Earthmoving early 2017.
Don is our Christchurch Transport Manager and is responsible for managing day to day fleet/plant operations in the Canterbury region. Don has 37 years experience in the earthmoving industry and has worked for Paul Smith Earthmoving in both Timaru and Christchurch for the past 10 years. Previous to his current position Don was a Site Manager on a number of large projects including the Hagley Oval, St Martins New World and various SCIRT roading projects as part of the Christchurch Rebuild.
Simon is one of our Christchurch Project Manager’s. Simon joined Paul Smith Earthmoving in 2018 after spending 6 years working for an established Christchurch based Civil Construction company. Simon has worked his way from the ground up beginning in a plant operators role prior to moving into a Project Managers role 3 years ago. Simon is skilled with survey/setout and GPS control and setup. Simon has successfully managed a number of high profile projects including the Te Whariki Subdivision Development in Lincoln, Christchurch Art Center and most recently the Fonterra Darfield RO Plant Project.
Nathanael is one of our Christchurch Project Manager’s and has over 8 years experience as a Project Engineer / Senior Project Engineer. Nathanael has extensive experience managing roading and water construction projects and has completed a number of projects in the Canterbury region including the Ashburton Watermains Renewal Project, Parnham Lane Rising Main Project, Prestons Road Upgrade and The Margaret Mahy Family Park Waters Project.
Joey is a Site Manager and brings 7 years’ experience in the Construction & Civil Industry including 4 years experience as a Site Manager for Paul Smith Earthmoving. Joey is skilled and experienced in civil works projects across a range of work streams including roading, earthworks and drainage. He has been involved in a number of projects in Christchurch including Rangiora Pak N Save, SCIRT roading projects and more recently the Avonside Girls & Shirley Boys High Schools project.
Tania is the Office Manager of Paul Smith Earthmoving and has been with the company for over 15 years. Tania has over 25 years’ experience in administration roles within the transport and earthmoving industry. Tania is responsible for the smooth running of company-wide administrative functions covering debtor invoicing, creditor payments, payroll, company returns, and the day to day running of the Timaru office.
Peter is our company HR and HSQE Manager. He has over 17 years’ business and operational management experience. Peter is responsible for implementing, overseeing and contributing to workplace health, safety, environmental and quality risk management along with the associated responsibilities of human resources. Peter leads incident assessments, liaises with management for incident investigations and compiles monthly reports to drive proactive compliance management practices.
Peter was instrumental in Paul Smith Earthmoving attaining ISO 14001:2015 environmental accreditation, AS/NZS 4801:2001 and OHSAS 18001:2007 health and safety accreditation’s. He has direct experience in health, safety, quality and environmental assurance systems including establishment and management of these functions by in office and onsite. Peter is also responsible for liaison with project/operational managers to ensure HR and HSQE aspects underpin successful contractual outcomes and that all job obligations are met in line with client expectations.
Ellen has over 6 years’ management experience and is responsible for tender co-ordination and contract administrative requirements including contract negotiation, preparation of contract documents for execution, subcontractor communications, project planning and preparing and issuing construction progress reports. Since joining the company in 2015 Ellen has developed an in-depth knowledge of tendering and is a competent bid writer. Ellen was instrumental in Paul Smith Earthmoving attaining ISO 9001:2008 accreditation and has direct experience in quality assurance systems including establishment and management of quality functions onsite.
Jacques is our Chief Financial Officer and brings international experience in finance and accounts to the company. Jacques is responsible for the financial and accounting aspects of the business to ensure robust internal financial management that meets company and statutory requirements. Jacques also assists the company Project Managers and Contract Managers with monthly contract claims to ensure claim information such as labour, plant, materials and subcontractors is recorded accurately.
